| John Newbern once said, “People
can be divided into three groups: Those who make things
happen, those who watch things happen, and those who
wonder what has happened.” This quote is meaningful
to me in many ways, and completely describes the world
in which we live. Our professional world is a microcosm
of the whole, and defines who we are. Excellence in
clinical dental hygiene, knowledge and professionalism,
service to the community, and maintaining the high standards
of our profession should be the common goals that we
all strive to attain.
Our component has been participating in the Lanark
Park Health Fair for many years. We service hundreds
of families each October. This year, the call went out
for volunteers, and went unanswered. Dental Hygiene
screening and education was not offered at the Fair.
A crisis exists with the Dental Board of California.
The Board is scheduled to expire because Governor Schwarzenegger
vetoed the dental hygienist’s bill that would
have allowed the regulatory panel to continue beyond
next year.
Educators, those in the dental profession, allied health
care workers and the PTA called upon their groups to
contact legislators to urge support for the Bipartisan
Children’s Health Insurance Bill, {SCHIP}. The
President vetoed the bill.
These are but a few examples of current issues that
affect us all. I urge you to re-evaluate the status
of your professional life. Together we can make a difference.
Be a proud and informed member of ADHA, be knowledgeable
and proactive, network with your colleagues by attending
meetings and events. MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.
