Registered dental hygienists in the state of California are require to complete 25 units of continuing education every two years as part of their licensure renewal requirements. Half of these units may be completed with home study courses.
California dental hygienists may also want to pursue practicing in alternative settings outside of private practice. The licensed Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice, RDHAP, allows dental hygienists to treat specific populations, including homebound and nursing or residential care facility residents, who may not otherwise be able to receive regular dental hygiene care.
