Western Regional Examination Board (WREB) and Dental Hygiene Licensure in California

As of January 1, 2010, California now recognizes the Western Regional Examination, WREB, thus increasing the portability of a dental hygiene license across the Western States.

The historic passage of AB403 (Fuller) in 2009, sponsored by the California Dental Hygienists' Association, further recognizes the role of the dental hygiene profession in self-regulation.  The bill provides that satisfactory performance on either California's dental hygiene clinical examination, or satisfactory completion of the dental hygiene examination administered by WREB, will satisfy the clinical examination requirement for licensure as a dental hygienist in the state of California.  In addition to successfully passing the clinical exam there may be other requirements for licensure, such as ethics and state law exams, as dictated by individual state or regional statutes.

More information on the WREB and dental hygiene examination dates for 2010.

The Dental Hygiene Committee of California, (DHCC) has replaced the Committee on Dental Auxiliaries (COMDA) as the agency to contact in California about dental hygiene licensure, regulations, and other issues related to our profession.  The newly DHCC formed consists of nine members: four dental hygienists, one dentist and four public members. Seven of the nine-member committee have been appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger.
