5 Simple Tips to Keep Children’s Teeth Healthy and Strong

Tooth decay among children is widespread, and left untreated can eventually lead to life-threatening illnesses that go beyond the teeth and gums. The California Dental Hygienists’ Association offers the following tips for parents:

  1. Schedule annual dental visit by age one. In addition to looking for and preventing problems, an early dental visit can help educate you about your child's oral health and proper hygiene. Catching tooth decay in its earliest stages will help children avoid infectious dental disease.
  2. Brush and floss children’s teeth in the morning after breakfast and at night before bed. Younger children do not have the dexterity in their fingers and hands to brush and floss properly, and parents should help them to ensure that it is done effectively.
  3. Explain to your child why it’s important for them to take care of their teeth everyday. Instilling proper oral care habits at a young age is the best way to insure strong, healthy teeth throughout their lives.
  4. Limit the amount of sodas and sweetened juices that children drink. Children should be asked to swish their mouth out with water after drinking these types of beverages.
  5. Try replacing sugary foods (like candy) or starchy foods (like pretzels) in between meals with an apple, banana, or carrot. If children do eat in between meals, be sure they brush their teeth when finished.
