|
Diabetes, the sixth
leading cause of death in the United States, affects
nearly 21 million people. New cases of diabetes
are being reported in epidemic proportions. Diabetes
is the number one cause of renal failure, acquired
blindness and lower limb amputation not related
to trauma. Diabetes is also a major contributor
to cardiovascular disease. About 65 percent of all
diabetics will die from heart disease or stroke.
Dental hygienists
play an important role in educating diabetic patients
about their disease. As members of the health
care provider team, hygienists are in an ideal
position to provide patients with information
on disease self - management as well as referrals
to other health professionals when needed. |

| Working
Together To Manage Diabetes: A Guide for Pharmacists,
Podiatrists, Optometrists, and Dental Professionals
(PPOD) (265k pdf)
Diabetes education must be consistent across
the disciplines of pharmacy, podiatry, optometry,
and dentistry (PPOD), and promote a collaborative
approach to comprehensive diabetes care. Many
diabetics, or those who are at risk for diabetes,
do not regularly visit a primary care provider
but may seek the services of a PPOD provider.
PPOD providers are well positioned to deliver
prevention messages, communicate the need for
metabolic control, and facilitate multidisciplinary
diabetes care. |
