Dietary choices play a critical role in the prevention of dental caries as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle. It is the special responsibility of the dental team to provide patients with the necessary guidance for choosing nutrient-dense foods, achieving a healthy weight and maintaining adequate exercise levels. We hope that these pages will provide you with resources to integrate oral health with general health.

Healthy Eating and Physical Activity For A Lifetime
A Guide to a Healthy Lifestyle

Poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle, resulting in an energy imbalance (an imbalance between the calories consumed and the calories expended), contribute to about 400,000 of the 2 million or so annual deaths in the United States. In light of the growing number of overweight and obese Americans, a major focus of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans is to provide guidance on maintaining a healthy weight, and creating lifestyles that balance the number of calories eaten with the number of calories expended.

Small Step Adults, Teens and Kids
Make small deliberate changes in your lifestyle— changes that foster healthy eating, physical activity, and the development of habits that support the prevention of disease. This national public education program highlights small changes over time rather than drastic lifestyle changes that are difficult to maintain.

  Physical Activity
Making moderate physical activity a part of an adult's daily routine for at least 30 minutes per day reduces the risk of chronic health conditions such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery disease. Children and adolescents need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity on most days for the maintenance of good health and for healthy weight gain.
